SHOULD MY CHILD PLAY A VARIETY OF SPORTS?

Kidzphyz Sports CampsThere is a significant amount of research and discussion around whether or not young athletes should begin to specialise in their chosen sport at an early age. The answer to this debate is not so simple, but it is important to carefully consider the facts.

Concerns relating to bodily harm, impaired physical development, maturation, overtraining, boredom and burnout have been widely commented on when discussing young athletes who specialise from an early age. If you are a parent of a young child and you are wondering if you should ‘keep pushing’ your child into the one sport, then consideration must be made in respect to these key areas and the subsequent implications for your child and their social and emotional wellbeing.

Over my many years of teaching, coaching and working with young people, it has become increasingly apparent that many young athletes who are highly pressured, either intrinsically or externally by parents, often burnout before reaching their ultimate goal of playing at the highest level in professional sport. So many young athletes are pushed into their sporting career path at an early age without having the chance to experience the plethora of alternative sporting opportunities available. Many Australian kids are simply pushed into what is perceived to be ‘high money earning’ sports such as AFL, Cricket, Swimming, Basketball, Rugby, Netball, Golf or Tennis. Don’t get me wrong, I love these sports and everything they have to offer! They too, provide significant physical and social development opportunities for young children. But the truth is, far too many young athletes simply do not make it all the way to the top! Additional sports such as Athletics (track and field), Volleyball, Hockey, Badminton, Futsal and Touch (to name a few) have huge participation rates in Australian Schools and provide significant development opportunities for your children to learn about the many facets of social, emotional, physical and sporting success.

Often finding clubs and associations for your child to gain some experience in these additional sports can be challenging, so that’s where a children’s sports camp such as those offered at Kidzphyz can provide a great platform for your child to try these. With so many sports camps on offer, children can easily choose a 3-day clinic in the sport that is right for them, or alternatively they can join a multisport program and try them all. Hopefully they will experience the fun and excitement that all of these sports have to offer.

It can be a difficult decision for parents and children alike to choose which sport and when to specialise. In any case, the key components of all sport should be a balance between fun, enjoyment, engagement, social and physical development. IMG_3907Another sensational round of spring sports camps have recently been completed by Kidzphyz and Sports Camps Australia. Camp participants were delighted with the offerings over the 14 camps.  With three awesome camp sites, including Haileybury College in Keysborough, Yarra Valley Grammar in Ringwood and the new and exciting venue at Camberwell Girls Grammar School in Canterbury, our young sports enthusiasts were spoilt for choice.

It was great to all the kids having so much fun, whilst our expert coaches challenged them to reach new heights.  Our camp directors should be proud and we thanks Clarie Johnson, Corey Lawson Yoxford Rous, Aaron Stack and the entire team down at Haileybury who did a superb job of looking after the kids and running them ragged over the three days in Keysborough.  The soccer camp was a huge hit, especially in the lead up to the World Cup qualifiers for Australia.

Over in Ringwood, Sarah Hogan, Alex Hay and the rest of the team put on a super camp for the local Ringwood kids.  Kids came from all over the east to attend our Yarra Valley Grammar camps and they were not disappointed by the coaching talent and outstanding facilities on offer.

Closer into town, the Camberwell Girls Grammar camps were a hit for some of our boys and girls who, for many, experienced their first sports camp ever! The state of the art facilities and community support was a highlight as Kidzphyz and SCA delivered our first ever round of camps at the new site.  We very much look forward to returning to CGGS again in the next holiday break.

Thanks again to everyone who joined us these Spring school holidays.  We look forward to seeing you next time over the Christmas break.

Do not forget to follow Sports Camps Australia and Kidzphyz on Facebook and Instagram along with joining our mailing lists to stay updated for future camps and clinic around your local area.

Sarah Hogan image 1_1Kidzphyz and SCA will again launch a full selection of sporting camps this autumn with two jam-packed sites and over 12 different sport clinics on offer. Venues this upcoming school holiday will include Yarra Valley Grammar in Ringwood and Haileybury in Keysborough.

Kidzphyz and SCA are also very excited to welcome our newest Camp Director, Sarah Hogan who will be joining us at the Yarra Valley Grammar Sports Camps this autumn and will work closely with our camp participants to ensure they have a super time over the three days clinics.

Sarah Hogan joins us as an experienced PE and Health Teacher from Yarra Valley Grammar.  A passionate educator and coach, Sarah is committed to engaging children through sport and being involved from a physical, social and mental perspective.  She enjoys facilitating all of these aspects of their growth through sport and physical activity.  She has been involved in the local netball community for nearly 20 years, playing much of her junior netball for SPJ in the LYVNA competition.  An outstanding leader, Sarah has been coaching for over twelve years and is currently the Head Coach of the Woori Yallock FNC.  She is also on the coaching panel for DC North East Blaze in the Victorian Netball League, where she has continued to play in the competition for the past ten years.  Sarah has also been a leading Interleague Coach for the AFL Yarra Ranges (2015-current).  Incredibly, Sarah was named Captain of the Australian Mixed Netball team at the International Championships in October 2016.  Kidzphyz and Sports Camps Australia are extremely pleased to welcome her onto our team.

WINTER SPORTS CAMPS 2016

WINTER SPORTS CAMPS 2016

AFL Footy Melbourne Victory

The winter school holiday period is often the hardest here in Melbourne…. due to the cold and wet weather, for many of our SCA/Kidzphyz camp participants this year, it was the best ever.

After a 3 great days of sports fun, Kidzphyz and Sports Camps Australia (SCA) were please to host another wonderful camp for its participants.  The July camp offered the kids three full days of either soccer or AFL Football at the Haileybury, Keysborough campus.  Head Coaches Dean and George led another program full of excitement and fun, providing the kids which an enriching and enjoyable sports camp experience.IMG_9313

We where delighted to have the opportunity to watch and meet some of the A-League stars from Melbourne Victory who also gave up some of there time to meet with the kids on our Kidzphyz / SCA camp.

Although the cold weather is upon us and the winter school holiday period is often the hardest here in Melbourne, for many of our SCA/Kidzphyz camp participants this year, it was the best ever.  The rain didn’t get in the way, as the kids took to the fields, although for some sessions we admit that we had to retreat to the indoor facilities.

My boys attended the 3 day AFL footy camp at Haileybury last week and they expressed that “it was awesome”.  Thanks Greg and the team for all your hard work. (Ron – Parent)

SPRING KIDZPHYZ CAMP WRAP

After a sensational two weeks of school holidays, our Kidzphyz programs were highly successful. Camp participants were able to rub shoulders with some of the AFL’s elite talent, with both our Yarra Valley Grammar clinic and Hailebury camp hosting Nathan Freeman and Jordy De Goey from the Collingwood Football Club. Both these outstanding AFL footballers visited over the three day clinics to share their knowledge, experience and football skills with our young sports camp participants. The Kidzphyz participants were also able to grab an autograph, photo and ask questions of the Collingwood boys whilst on the camp. We must thank both Nathan and Jordy for kindly giving up their time to be with us at Kidzphyz and we look forward to them joining us again at another Sports camp in the near future.

Hi Kidzphyz,

My kids Matilda and Henry attended the Ringwood sports camp last week. I just wanted to say a very big thank you to everyone that ran the camp. The kids had a fabulous time. I hope to enrol them in your camps over the summer school holidays. Thank you for keeping them active and entertained!

Many thanks, Hannah (Parent of 2 children at Sept 15 Camp @ YVG)

Participants within our Hockey camps across Victoria also enjoyed the expert advice of our superstar coaches, including National League player and former Victorian U21’s star Lachlan Steinfort. The outstanding synthetic pitches of both Yarra Valley Grammar and Haileybury were bustling with kids as they continued to run, chase and smash hockey balls all day long.

The soccer clinic was a huge hit out in Ringwood. With the first class grounds and outstanding weather, the kids were treated to outstanding coaching team headed up by Exercise Scientist and Master Coach Andrew Christie. In the gym, our Basketball campers were treated to another three days of great coaching and skill development. Both camps were a blast, with kids from ages 6 – 14 took to the courts over the 2 exciting camps.
